Key Points
- The reason why Amazon integrated Luna games within Prime Video is that it realises that most of its 200 million-plus subscribers have no idea that the technology exists, and this was done on 23 July 2026.
- Integration is completely free for Amazon Prime subscribers on Fire TV devices in the United States and the United Kingdom.
- Luna’s game library was significantly narrowed in April and June 2026 ahead of this relaunch, raising genuine questions about whether placement alone can hold a new audience.
This particular cloud gaming technology has been around for four years now. Many millions of people have paid to use it. Most of them have never even opened it before.
The Luna gaming platform from Amazon was moved into the Prime Video application on Fire TV in the United States and the United Kingdom on July 23, 2026. There is no additional cost for Prime subscribers. No downloads are required, no accounts to set up, and there is no need to use a controller when using a smartphone.
Jeff Gattis, Amazon’s General Manager of Gaming, said in the official launch statement: “For a lot of people, games have been harder to find than they should be. Bringing Luna inside Prime Video allows Prime members to discover games more naturally, and if they see one they like, they click it and they’re in.”
It functions both as an announcement for a new product and a recognition of the company’s failure. Luna was introduced to the U.S. market in March 2022 and has now expanded to 14 other countries. However, four years down the line, Gattis is using awareness as the main problem facing Luna, even when he sits within a Prime membership with over 200 million users.
Luna’s Awareness Problem, in Amazon’s Own Words
Amazon poured significant investment into Luna, embedded it into a subscription people already pay for, and watched the vast majority of those subscribers never find it. The discovery problem was not incidental; it was the defining challenge of the platform’s entire commercial life.
“The number one challenge we have, despite everything we did to push all that value into Amazon Prime, 200-million-plus Prime members worldwide, is not enough of them know that they have it,” Gattis told Variety. “So it’s this weird place where we feel really good about the product, and we just have a general awareness and discoverability problem.”
Prime Video attracts far more daily traffic than any standalone gaming app Luna could reasonably build. Placing a Games tab in the same navigation bar where users already browse for films and sport gives Luna the kind of passive visibility that a dedicated app simply cannot generate. Gattis noted that following the 2025 Luna relaunch, the active player base grew roughly fivefold, though he acknowledged that figure started from a small base. The Prime Video integration is the next attempt to accelerate that number toward something commercially meaningful.
What Prime Members Can Now Access?
Fire TV users in the US and UK will see the Games tab near the top of the Prime Video interface. The library covers a range of titles: AAA games including Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Fallout 4, alongside the GameNight collection of party games such as Clue, Ticket to Ride, and Taboo. EA Sports FC 26 is also available. Every title runs through a traditional controller or a smartphone acting as one.
Amazon has created a number of associations for its video streams with the Luna titles to drive cross-promotion efforts. There is a movie titled “Masters of the Universe” available on Prime Video along with a multiplayer card-battling game called “Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite”. There is an AI party game named “Courtroom Chaos: Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger” available on Luna and there is also a movie on Prime Video featuring him to come out in 2026.
Glasgow-based studio Blazing Griffin developed Batman: Caped Crusader, Chronicles for the GameNight platform, launching on 31 July 2026 to coincide with Season 2 of the animated series on Prime Video. Justin Alae-Carew, Co-Head of Games at Blazing Griffin, described the scope: “The fact that the game is accessible to every Prime member from day one with no console, no downloads, just a phone, means the reach is unlike anything we’ve delivered before.”
What Amazon Cut Before Relaunching?
This comes after a time when Amazon decided to restrict the scope of Luna. In April-June 2026, Amazon discontinued single game purchases, stripped Luna of its third-party subscription extensions like Ubisoft+ and Jackbox Games, and disabled the Bring Your Own Library program that allowed users to stream games from their personal library on EA, GOG and Ubisoft stores. The last date by which users could play Luna games previously purchased was 10th June.
What remains is a two-tier model: Luna Standard, bundled with Prime, and Luna Premium, a rotating catalogue at $9.99 per month. In comparison to the Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce NOW from Nvidia, which boast greater library sizes and more flexibility, the current offering of Luna represents the smallest size in the entire history of the service. Amazon has not undone any of these decisions. The Prime Video integration does not restore removed features. Luna Premium is also not yet accessible through the Prime Video interface at launch, though Gattis confirmed that fuller integration is planned.
On the question of Amazon’s own major upcoming titles, including two Tomb Raider games tied to a television series, Gattis indicated a windowing strategy is being considered, where Amazon-published games might arrive on Luna Premium simultaneously with other platforms rather than as exclusives. No formal announcement has been made.
Rising Hardware Costs Give Luna a Genuine Opening
The broader context favours Amazon’s timing. The new consoles are expected to go for the $1,000 to $1,500 mark, and the persistent memory shortage has continued to drive up prices of the components. Gattis raised the point himself in interviews: cloud gaming has spent years searching for a problem large enough to justify the category, and expensive hardware may finally be providing one.
Microsoft is following along the same path as well. In late June 2026, the Xbox Insiders got the option of streaming games that they have already purchased for free, for one hour at a time with an advertisement before each session, without having to have Game Pass Ultimate in their subscription. Game Pass Ultimate will continue to be available for a monthly price of $22.99. This is just a new feature being tested out as part of a different experience altogether.
Expert Analysis: Placement Without Content Is a Temporary Fix
The Prime Video integration solves a real problem. Getting Luna in front of passive Prime Video users, people who open the app to watch a series and notice games sitting in the same tab, is a more efficient path to first-time sessions than any standalone marketing effort.
The risk, though, is that placement generates curiosity but catalogue holds it. Luna’s 2026 library cuts left the service with fewer options than competitors at precisely the point Amazon is pitching it to casual players who have no prior loyalty to the platform. If the Games tab becomes a feature users glance at and move past, Luna’s awareness problem simply migrates into a retention problem.
Amazon’s longer-term content pipeline, Bond, Tomb Raider, potential 007 First Light sequels, carries enough weight to change that picture. Whether those titles reach Luna before the Prime Video novelty fades will determine whether this integration marks a genuine turning point or another missed step for a platform that has been almost finding its audience for four years.
