Fortnite Save the World Goes Free-to-Play on April 16

Fortnite Save the World Post

Key Points

Epic Games confirmed Fortnite Save the World will turn free on April 16 after operating for more than eight years as paid PvE content.

The mode first appeared in early access during 2017 at $39.99 before Epic later offered a $19.99 bundle including V-Bucks.

Epic aims for one million pre-registrations and milestone rewards will unlock including the Snowstrike Hero.

Epic Games stated Fortnite Save the World, the first Fortnite mode where players build forts and fight Husks, will move to free access on April 16. The company sold the mode across different prices through the years including a recent bundle costing $19.99 which included Fortnite V-Bucks. Back in 2017 Epic released the survival experience through early access and players purchased the mode for $39.99. Before the new launch Epic removed Fortnite Save the World from digital stores to prepare access for more players.

Early Design of Fortnite PvE Mode

The survival mode represents the first stage of Fortnite before battle royale reshaped the game into worldwide success. Players travel inside a destructible world while fighting monsters and defending bases during waves of Husks. Participants build structures, craft weapons, collect loot, and increase character level through gameplay missions.

Players have an opportunity to match or invite players to cooperate with them and mix their skills to kill enemies in challenging zones. Fortnite was strategised by Epic long before the inception of battle royale, and it was conceived in 2012 at Comic-Con in San Diego. In Epic’s play experience, you collected loot, built forts, and tried to stay alive while monsters hunted you down. Fortnite stood out as the first Epic game built with Unreal Engine 4. At first, Epic wanted to make this mode free. Later, they changed course and put the content behind a paywall.

During several years Save the World remained paid while battle royale mode gained strong recognition among players worldwide. Buyers who owned the Founders Edition continued receiving V-Bucks through quests, mission alerts, Storm Shield Defence missions, and challenges. Players who purchased the mode earlier will gain rewards when free access begins on April 16.

Epic plans to send Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold to those owners on launch day. Epic started pre-registration for the free launch and created a goal of one million registered players. Registration includes milestone rewards which unlock as player numbers increase. The initial milestone takes the place of 300,000 registering and the second milestone is triggered by 700,000 players. The last milestone unlocks Snowstrike Hero once registration reaches one million players.

Epic also grants one free hero reward to motivate players registering before the launch. These prizes will be presented to increase community participation prior to the official launch. The free edition is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It is also streaming on Amazon Luna, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Epic made it clear: Save the World won’t work on smartphones or tablets, not even with cloud gaming. The original Nintendo Switch will not support the mode which blocks access for players using that console.

Community Hints and Online Signals

Epic posted hints about the update through social platforms including X, Instagram, Reddit, and TikTok. Those hints sparked discussion among fans who believed the free launch was approaching. Two teaser videos along with a Reddit comment caught strong attention within the community.

One video showed bacon placed inside locations including a drawer, a bed, a copier machine, and a toilet seat. The reference links to Bacon which acts as a crafting resource inside Save the World. Players use the resource to craft equipment such as Energy Cells, Ceiling Gas Trap, Healing Pad, and Defender Posts.

Another teaser video presented a calendar showing July 2017 before switching to Save the World gameplay. The video showed a defender protecting Homebase while Husks moved forward during the attack. Viewers also noticed traps and bomb smoke colours inside the gameplay which suggest upcoming features. Discussion expanded after a Reddit comment recalled predictions made two years earlier about free access.

The official Fortnite account replied using an eye emoji which many players treated as a signal. The Save the World update appears as Epic introduces further changes across Fortnite. Epic has just added changes in V-Bucks prices and Battle Pass expenses prior to season 2 of Chapter 7.

Although Fortnite currently dominates the battle royale market segment, the franchise originally began as cooperative PvE survival gameplay. Earlier builds were even sold on physical discs before online multiplayer expanded the game ecosystem. Moving the mode into free access completes a development path which began more than a decade earlier. When the mode launches free on April 16 Epic will bring the first Fortnite gameplay experience to a wider audience.
